Drew Southworth, Program Director and U14 Coach

Drew’s passion of skiing started back 28 years ago on hills of Vermont. He grew up racing and then later coaching for Killington Mountain School. This will be his 11th year of coaching, 8th with the Brighton Ski Team where he is a level 100 certified USSA Coach. This year Drew will be the Program Director and will coach the U14 athletes, where his main focus will be to develop and maintain technique and structure in each racer. During the winter if you can’t find him making turns at Brighton, you can usually locate Drew hiking around and skiing in the backcountry, looking for those fresh powder lines. Aside from ski racing, he also loves mountain biking and being in the outdoors. Drew is a father of 4 year old Gabriela - a future BST racer.

Deborah Myers, U10 Coach

Deborah, originally from Michigan, began to ski at age three when her parents invested in the then brand new, Vail Mountain. She spent her childhood holidays exploring the back bowls of Vail and racing in Nastar events. These magical ski memories are what eventually drew her back to the West to pursue her passion for skiing. Deborah is a PSIA Certified Level 3 ski instructor and advanced educator. She began teaching skiing in Vermont while attending college. Deborah has spent the past 23 seasons teaching for the Brighton Ski and Snowboard School, with training instructors as her primary focus. Moving in a new direction, she looks forward to applying her technical eye and movement analysis skills to ski team athletes while growing their lifelong love for skiing. Deborah also enjoys backcountry telemark skiing and mountain biking, and she is a certified yoga and standup paddleboard instructor.

Eric Ren, U10 Coach

Eric is unusual among ski racing coaches in that he comes from a ski patrol and freestyle background. He can be seen on our race courses in baggy pants on his twin tips and is an advocate for adding rails and kickers on GS courses. He is, however, wonderful at sharing his love and knowledge of skiing with our younger YSL racers, and the kids love to occasionally sneak off to the terrain park with Coach Eric to ruin their race skis grinding rails, much to the lament of their parents. We are thrilled to have Eric back with us for his 6th season!

Maddison McQuivey, U10 Peer Coach

Ski racing was my life for 5 years with the BST. It was one of the best and most memorable experiences of my life. One of the best things about the BST is, the bond between coaches and team mates and learning to ski to your fullest ability. This year I decided to focus on school a little more, but was very sad I couldn't race. Fortunately I'm going to be a peer coach. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and skiing with the kids. I'm so thankful I can still be a part of the BST.

Tom Rust - U8 Coach

Thanks to my parents… I grew up skiing and racing at Schweitzer Basin in Sandpoint, ID along with my 4 brothers and 3 sisters.  As a junior racer, I was fortunate enough to qualify for and compete in the Western Regional Junior Olympics twice, and went on to compete and coach at the collegiate level for the University of Idaho. In the late 1990’s, I returned to Sandpoint and spent several winters as a ski/snowboard instructor, earning my level-2 PSIA ski instructor certification, and level-1 snowboarding and nordic credentials. In addition, I worked as Head Youth Ski Racing Coach for Schweitzer Alpine Racing School, and earned my USSA level-1 coaching certificate. In 2001, I moved to Utah with my wife Gloria “Raychel” Gonzales, M.D.  We have two children: Isabella (age 10) and Lorenzo (age 8).  Recently, I have volunteered and coached for the Rowmark Junior Program for 3 years, while my kids participated.  Skiing is a lifelong passion that I look forward to sharing with my children and yours!

AJ Parker - U8 Coach

Ski racing was my life from 7 years old to 18 years old. I raced with Brighton the entire time. One thing I learned from all the racing is IT’S A RACE! Not everyone can win, but everyone can do their best and have fun. That’s what its all about. I was very competitive when I was racing and I always thought if I didn’t win then I was a horrible skier. Only now as I’ve grown up do I realize that its not about winning, its about the journey and the personal progress that you make. But winning is always fun!

Elena Wagner - U8 Peer Coach

Elena has lived exactly half her life in Minnesota and half in Utah.  While she claims to be a Minnesotan, she agrees that 300 feet of vertical doesn't cut it in the winter anymore. Elena's 4 year ski race career was with the BST, where she loved training and racing slalom. Much of her time is taken up with swimming on the Brighton High School and Cottonwood Heights swim teams, but she was really missing her one year away from the BST.  She looks forward to skiing with the U8s.

Abby Duzy - U8 Peer Coach

Sami Duzy, Fast 5s Coach

Sami learned to ski against her will at the age of 4 when her dad dragged her to the modest slopes of Big Bear in Southern California. When her family moved to Utah in 2001, her father placed her in ski lessons at Snowbird every weekend while he worked at the Wasatch Adaptive Center. She joined the Brighton Ski Team as a U10 (then known as J5) in 2004, and has been here ever since in some capacity, whether it be racing, volunteering, peer coaching, or coaching. She is now 21 years old and a senior at the University of Utah studying Spanish and International Public Health. When she's not skiing or studying, she spends her free time doing yoga, hiking, and being ignored by her cat.

Aspen Parker - Fast 5s Peer Coach

Aspen has been skiing since she was 2 years old. She spent 7+ years racing with the Brighton Ski Team and loved every minute of it. She has really missed it and is excited to be back this year as a peer coach. Aspen hopes to help the kids she is coaching to improve their skills and learn to have fun!  Aspen is currently Jr. Class President and Cheer Captain at Kearns High School.  I obviously love to keep busy.  I look forward to working with you all.  Have fun!!!!  Ski Fast!!!!
